Fort Morgan

Since 1834, Fort Morgan has stood as the guardian of Mobile Bay and is now recognized as a National Historic Landmark located 22 miles west of Gulf Shores. Construction began in 1819 and was completed by skilled masons, including enslaved African Americans, resulting in a massive brick fortification. It was preceded by Fort Bowyer, which played a key role during the War of 1812, facing two British attacks—one a decisive American victory and the other ending in surrender. Following the war, Fort Bowyer was returned to the United States under treaty terms.
