Spooky Coastal Stories to Share Around the Fire Pit

The night is cool and still. The Gulf waves roll softly in the distance while sparks rise from the fire pit into the dark October sky. It’s the perfect setting for ghost stories — and here along the Alabama Gulf Coast, the tales are as deep and mysterious as the waters themselves.

So gather close, listen carefully, and don’t be surprised if you find yourself glancing over your shoulder as you hear these haunting legends from the shoreline.

1. The Soldier Who Never Left Fort Morgan

The sun had set hours ago, leaving Fort Morgan cloaked in shadow. The massive brick walls stood silent, relics of battles long past. Or so the tour guides said.

But listen closely, and you might hear it: the steady, rhythmic sound of boots striking stone. Step. Step. Step.

They say one soldier never left his post, his loyalty to the fort stronger than death itself. Visitors have felt sudden cold drafts in the tunnels, smelled pipe tobacco in rooms untouched for decades, and even seen a figure in uniform vanish into thin air.

If you find yourself at Fort Morgan on a misty October night, pause and listen. If you hear footsteps echoing through the empty corridors… don’t follow them.

The soldier may not like being disturbed.

2. Jean Lafitte’s Hidden Treasure

Long ago, the infamous pirate Jean Lafitte prowled the waters of the Gulf, his ships slipping silently into coves and inlets under cover of darkness. His crew plundered gold, jewels, and silver, hiding their loot wherever they could — but not all of it ever made it back to New Orleans.

Legend has it that Lafitte buried a great treasure somewhere along the Alabama coast, perhaps near Perdido Bay or Mobile Bay.

Some fishermen claim they’ve seen strange lights hovering over the water at night, flickering like lanterns carried by ghostly pirates guarding their hoard.

They say that if you venture out by boat on a moonless night and see those lights, you must turn back immediately.

For if the spirits of Lafitte’s crew catch you searching for their gold… you might just join them at the bottom of the bay.

3. The Lady in White of Fort Gaines

Across the bay on Dauphin Island lies Fort Gaines, a weathered guardian that has seen centuries of storms and battles. And perhaps… heartbreak.

On certain nights, a figure dressed in white is said to wander the fort’s walls, her form glowing faintly against the dark sky. Some believe she is the spirit of a young woman whose love never returned from war. She roams the fort endlessly, searching for him, forever watching the waters for a ship that will never come home.

Others claim she is a warning — a ghostly guardian urging the living to leave before nightfall.

If you catch a glimpse of her, heed her warning. No one knows what happens to those who linger after dark.

4. The Lights of Mobile Bay

Along the quiet shores of Mobile Bay, fishermen and locals have reported strange sightings for generations: mysterious lights dancing across the water.

They move too erratically to be boats, too bright to be natural reflections. Some drift slowly, like lanterns carried by invisible hands, while others dart and flicker like restless spirits.

Many believe these lights are the souls of sailors lost to shipwrecks and storms, doomed to wander the bay forever.

Others think they’re omens — warnings of danger to come.

If you ever see the lights, stay silent. Watch from the safety of the shore, and whatever you do, don’t call out to them.

They might just answer.

5. The Disappearing Island

Between Orange Beach and Perdido Key lies a strange, shifting sandbar known as Disappearing Island. It appears only at low tide, a fleeting stretch of golden sand surrounded by turquoise water.

But the locals whisper a darker tale.

They say the island isn’t just swallowed by the tide — it crosses into another realm entirely.

If you linger too long as the tide rises, you may find yourself trapped there, fading away along with the island.

And when the waters recede again, you’ll be gone… just another ghost story told around a fire pit.
